It should have been an accident that led to a large-scale deployment of emergency services in the new building in Vienna on Thursday afternoon. The alarm was raised in a school because an experiment in chemistry class caused a flash of fire. A total of nine professional rescue vehicles from Vienna and the disaster train made their way to the scene, where rescuers found several injured students in the school hallway.
A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old had suffered serious injuries: they had extensive burns on their upper body and legs. Three other students were slightly injured and all five were rushed to hospital.
Substances mixed with alcohol
The 41-year-old chemistry teacher, visibly shocked but unharmed, told police that she had conducted an experiment with students in the classroom, in which individual groups had been formed. According to the teacher, a 16-year-old student added too much alcohol to the substances in the experiment.
Explosion and flame
As a result, the gas evaporated, a strong explosion and a flame were the consequences. It is unclear if the student wanted to indulge in a joke or if he had put too much alcohol in the other substances out of ignorance. The teacher and the 16-year-old student were charged on suspicion of negligent bodily injury.
The institute’s management said the incident could not be explained because it was an experiment that had already been carried out on several occasions. In any case, one is deeply affected. The uninjured students from the class returned to school on Friday. The goal is to address the incident before fall break. Those affected are cared for by the school’s psychosocial service.
