FC Red Bull Salzburg missed the big sensation and did not reach the Champions League knockout stage for the first time. The Bulls had to admit defeat 2-0 despite a strong Atlético de Madrid. Thanks to Bayern Munich’s home win against Lok Moscow, the Austrian series champions are third in the final and will be able to continue playing in the Europa League this spring.
Salzburg starts with a lot of fire and energy
Salzburg started with a lot of pressure and energy in this last match for the ticket to the knockout phase in the premier class. After two minutes Mergim Berisha had a great opportunity to finish off with a good hook and walked away, but his attempt ended on pole (2nd). Luckily for the Spanish, they were caught off guard by the police in the early stages. Additionally, Mozart’s townspeople showed up very aggressively and resolutely in the duels. After a quarter of an hour, the home team found the next opportunity: Mwepu edged out Koita, whose shot was too weak, so Oblak had no problems (15th). A minute later, Szoboszlai took direct from a pass from Mwepu, but the Atlético goalkeeper dived hard and deflected for a corner.
The current leaders of the First Division found the game after about 20 minutes played and combined with their first chance to score: Marcus Llorente served from a good 25 meters, but shot wide (23). But the police had more deals. After winning the ball in the center of the field, things went to Mozartstädter: Koita made a dry and abrupt pass in the field of Daka, who hesitated too much and shot over the goal (30th). On the other hand, the proteges of the march were lucky that Stankovic was there to save after a blunder by Wöber (33rd).
The standard situation attracts Salzburg
But it happened as it had to. Salzburg conceded a goal again after a standard situation. After Junuzovic fouled the talented Joao Félix, Carrasco circulated a free kick from the left half to the penalty area, where Hermoso joked the ball into the goal with the back of his neck – 0: 1 (40). With this intermediate result, he also entered the half time break.
Szoboszlai forgives the seats – Atlético played hard and went to the round of 16
Immediately after the break, Salzburg gave up two all-time top chances. At first Kristensen shot just wide from the corner (47.), before Szoboszlai suddenly came completely free in front of Oblak after a combination with Berisha, but the Hungarian put the ball close to the left – a great opportunity that courted the Salzburg. Excluded youth (49th).
The Bulls continued to work hard against the hardened Spaniards, who only conceded two goals in ten games in the current Primera División, although the Madrileños played their defensive strengths perfectly and allowed hardly anything. In the 81st minute, Stankovic avoided a remarkable goal from Joao Félix with a strong save. On the other hand, the hosts repeatedly entered the danger zone in dangerous ways, but Atlético goalkeeper Oblak was never really in danger in the second half.
In the 86th minute, the guests made it all clear with the second goal: Correa picked up speed on a counterattack and carried the ball high to the center. Yannick Carrasco took over the band and shot into the far corner – 0: 2 (86). This sealed the defeat of Salzburg. The bulls can still say goodbye to the premier class with their heads held high and continue in the Europa League with courage and confidence in the spring.
