LIonel Messi threatens the first defeat in the Champions League in 14 years with FC Barcelona. In the gigantic duel against last year’s finalist Paris St. Germain, with the outstanding three-goal scorer Kylian Mbappé, the Spanish club lost 1: 4 (1: 1) in the first leg of the round of 16. More recently, Barça were eliminated in the round of 16 against Liverpool in 2007.

In the return leg on March 10, the French series champions have rights at home with German national players Julian Draxler and Thilo Kehrer, both substituted at the Camp Nou. The Parisians, who lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich to manager Thomas Tuchel in the August final, can only advance to the second quarter-finals in the last five years.

With his 20th competitive goal of the season, Messi gave Barça the lead with a penalty (27th), Mbappé turned the high-class and fast-paced game around for PSG with a triple (32nd, 65th and 85th) . Moise Kean (70th) also scored for Paris.

The first chance came from French world champion Antoine Griezmann, who failed after Messi and Pedri’s preparatory work from a narrow angle to PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas (14th). Paris, very self-confident even without their injured offensive stars Neymar and Angel di Maria, quickly switched to winning the ball Mauro Icardi suddenly appeared free in front of Barça goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Pedri saved (19th).

A penalty kick gave Barça the advantage: Frenkie de Jong fell into the penalty area after a contact from Layvin Kurzawa, and Messi converted with confidence. Mbappé showed his class when he equalized by beating two defenders after a pass from Marco Verratti and nailed the ball into the net. Just three minutes later, Kurzawa failed after a cross by Mbappé on ter Stegen, in exchange Griezmann missed the goal by just centimeters (37º).

After the break, Ter Stegen was challenged again as soon as Kean had the tour standing (50th). Barça, for the first time since November with their recovered defender Piqué, had the game a little better under control afterwards. But the goal fell on the other side: after an unfortunate defensive action by Piqué, Mbappé found himself again. As a result, Paris was difficult for the Spanish to hold, sometimes quickly counterattacking and ruining the outcome.
