The election of the municipal councils and the electoral campaign take place under new conditions. LPO Gruber: “The concept of protection and early voting ensure that everyone is safe.”
Klagenfurt (OTS) – ÖVP regional party chair Martin Gruber and regional director Julia Löschnig describe the upcoming municipal council election in Carinthia on February 28 as a “special election”. “The conditions are particularly due to the corona pandemic,” says Gruber. The state guaranteed the greatest possible security for people with a concept of protection on election day and the possibility of voting by voting card or from the beginning of February in municipal offices. Gruber appeals: “Voters should make the widest possible use of offers.”
The ÖVP candidates also see themselves in a completely new situation in the communities. “I am proud of the way our officers have handled the situation so far,” Gruber said. Löschnig emphasizes that everyone’s safety will continue to be guaranteed throughout the election campaign. “In the community in particular, politicians are particularly close to citizens,” says Löschnig. “The current situation in the electoral campaign, without direct contact with the voters, is new and demanding.” Instead of the usual home visits, there will be conversations at the front door or on the garden fence. Löschnig: “All ÖVP candidates are encouraged not to enter houses and apartments, but to hold conversations at a distance and mask outside of them.” There are also telephone chains, video messages and contacts via video telephony.
Gruber is convinced that the People’s Party in the Carinthian communities will achieve its goals even under these conditions. “We currently have 700 councilors and 42 mayors,” recalls Gruber. “We want to clearly increase these numbers.” On February 28, the ÖVP will compete in 128 municipalities with lists of all generations. “The mere fact that we have both the oldest and the youngest candidate, Karl Petritz in Steuerberg and Maximilian Peter in St. Andrä, shows how broad the Carinthian People’s Party is,” says Gruber. Petritz is 79 years old, Peter 22. Löschnig is particularly proud of the higher proportion of women among the ÖVP’s leading candidates. “In 2015, four women topped the charts, this time it’s 15,” Löschnig said of her personal concern about bringing more women to political responsibility.
Löschnig finds another advantage of the ÖVP candidates. “In all the communities there appear personalities that no longer have to be presented to the population,” he says. All of them are deeply anchored in society through their political, professional or voluntary commitment. “They are personalities who are trusted to take responsibility in these difficult times,” added Löschnig. Many have been active for years and have already provided evidence, others will do so in the future. “Gruber said:” We, as the People’s Party, show that we are a reliable partner at all levels in difficult times. “
