After an employee of the cabinet of European and constitutional minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) tested positive for SARS-CoV2 on Thursday afternoon, the department head is also in home quarantine. Edtstadler has already been tested and is negative. She is now waiting at home for instructions from health authorities, a spokesman said late at night at the APA’s request.
The employee Edtstadler had contact with at the office is also under home quarantine. According to a press release, he is doing well under the circumstances. All other contact persons were also immediately screened, are under home quarantine until further notice and, it was emphasized, will follow the instructions of the authorities in full.
Opening of Edtstadler’s participation in the EU Council meeting
Due to the case of the crown in Edtstadler’s cabinet, it is unclear whether the minister can attend the General Affairs Council next Tuesday (September 22) in Brussels. This would be the council’s first meeting in the wake of the Covid crisis, which should take place again in the physical presence of the participants.
Before Edtstadler’s cabinet, other Austrian government offices were already affected by corona cases. In early August, a support employee at the Federal Chancellery tested positive, but had no contact with Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP). In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there was also a recent case, a trip planned by the department head Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) to Greece and Cyprus was canceled. Before that there had been a positive result there at the end of July.
