On Sunday, the Spanish league announced that Lionel Messi is working on a contract valid until 2021 with a release clause of 700 million euros. Apparently, however, a loophole could be opened for movement without transfers.
As reported by “TyC Sports” from Argentina, as well as “Onda Cero” and “L’Équipe”, there is a passage in Messi’s contract that allows him a free signing this summer. The aforementioned exit clause says: “This amount (700 million euros, editor’s note) does not apply in the event that the contract is terminated by a unilateral decision of the player from the end of the 2019/20 season.”
The question now is what is defined as “the end of the 2019/20 season.” Due to the Crown crisis, it is well known that this lasted not only until June 30, but much longer. So far, Barça officials have taken the position that Messi will be under contract for one more season and that in any case a (high) transfer fee would be paid in the event of a transfer.
Meanwhile Messi’s supposed dream club Manchester City has already put together a contract package.
