While the coalition in the National Council praised efforts to combat the crisis in the crown, the opposition painted a grim picture.
The “first reading” of the budget brought the expected evaluations. While the coalition praised efforts to combat the crown crisis, the opposition painted a grim picture. The head of the SPÖ, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, saw the budget as a “manifesto of broken promises”, the president of the FPÖ club, Herbert Kickl, “guaranteed” the continuation of the economic recession and the leader of the parliamentary group Neos, Beate Meinl -Reisinger, witnessed the “autocracy” of the government.
Coalition representatives had a completely different view of things in the National Council debate Thursday morning. August Wöginger, vice president of the club, said that the figures presented would counteract the crisis situation. The coalition is aware that the money will have to be paid back once. But now the business cycle must remain intact.
Wöginger listed in detail where the government is taking countermeasures. The accolades ranged from short-term jobs to deferrals, guarantees and parish packages. The turquoise club boss praised the short-term job as a successful model that is unrivaled. The labor foundation that has been created will in turn help create urgently needed jobs in the care sector.
Greens see a “climate budget”
The president of the Green Club, Sigrid Maurer, expects “green jobs” from the foundation, as she sees the environment as the big winner of the budget proposal: “This budget is a green budget, it is a climate budget.” More money is being spent than ever on green change.
As Wöginger had previously highlighted priorities in the departments led by the vice presidents, Maurer focused on the Green Ministries. In this way, art and culture would have the greatest economic resources they ever had. With the Minister of Justice Alma Zadic (Greens) and her budget increase, the judicial emergency feared by predecessor Clemens Jabloner was avoided.
However, Rendi-Wagner would have expected many more efforts, especially of an economic nature. AMS’s per capita budget is even lower than in 2017, which was not a crisis year. Regardless, a historically large stimulus package would be needed. A budget should save jobs and businesses and strengthen small and medium income.
The threatening thing is that currently the flagships of the national industry begin to shake. Premises are being closed, there is a massive reduction in jobs and the government is doing nothing about it: “Let’s end the policy of empty promises,” Rendi-Wagner shouted at the government bank and at the same time criticized the fact that the next stage of the tax cut has been canceled.
Kickl: “Disclaimer Meeting”
FPÖ club president Herbert Kickl did not forget to mention it. So far, the government has only implemented the plans of former Finance Secretary Hubert Fuchs (FPÖ). If you are already taking your concepts out of the drawer, you should also advance the second part of the tax relief.
Kickl presented a list of companies that have cut jobs in recent weeks and considers that this movement still has the support of the government. Instead of attracting new settlements, the location policy expelled: “They go to Turkey or Poland.” The current budget is also impressed, “that this drop, this crash course will continue in 2021.” On the other hand, no one in the ÖVP wants to be blamed for it: “a collection of disclaimers, with V as in the Popular Party.”
Future investments did not include Neos club president Meinl-Reisinger in Finance Minister Gernot Blümel’s (ÖVP) budget proposal. It also lacks the government’s courage to implement real tax reform. In his opinion, a volume of nine billion would be necessary.
What the government has presented is a crisis budget, “but nothing beyond that.” Blaming everything on the global crisis seems too cheap for Meinl-Reisinger. After all, with its extremely extensive blockade, the government further escalated the economic crisis. The head of NEOS sees the fact that there is now money available to counter this not as an achievement of previous governments, but as that of taxpayers who, among other things, dumped money into the state budget through cold progression.
