Vienna – Saturday, April 3, 2021, 11:07 pm
Wels basketball players are heading to the Austrian championship semifinals for the first time in the Flyers era.
On Saturday the Upper Austria celebrate their second victory in the second match of the “best of five” quarter-final series at 88:75 (41:37) over the Dukes Klosterneuburg and already have a “match point” of away on Thursday. The same applies to the Oberwart Gunners, who win at St. Pölten 86:82 (47:48) and can fix their progress on Thursday at home.
Wels can only ensure success in the last quarter. Heavily decimated opponents successfully defend themselves for a long time, but ultimately they have to pay tribute to the fact that they can only muster eight players. The Gunners are also fully challenged at St. Pölten, only the final minutes bring the decision in favor of Oberwart’s top scorer Sebastian Käferle (23 points) and Co.
Vienna, meanwhile, counterattacks at 82:80 (43:31) against the Kapfenberg Bulls. A 26: 6 in the second leg paves the way for the Viennese to equalize in the series. Long unstoppable is former Euroleague center Vladimir Golubovic, who scored 25 of his 31 points before the break. The chase of the defending champion in the fourth quarter comes too late.
In the fight for relegation, the Vienna DC Timberwolves advanced 72:61 (38:30) in the “playdown” against the Traiskirchen Lions. The winner of the “best of five” duel is still first class. The loser has to come down if the Fürstenfeld Panthers reach the final of the Second Bundesliga. The Oststeirer has applied for a BSL license.
