After leading scientists called for a strict lockdown on Germany, Chancellor Kurz is also confirmed on the lockdown on Austria.
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) believes that the harsh blockade of the crown in Austria has been confirmed by the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. This recently issued a statement calling for a harsh closure in Germany, including the closure of schools. “This document confirms us,” Kurz told the main committee of the National Council on Wednesday.
Kurz recalled that the federal government had been “heavily scolded” by opposition banks for the closure measures carried out in recent weeks, especially the closure of schools. But: “From the point of view of this group of scientists, what we did was good,” he emphasized. In a broadcast, Kurz also described the German experts’ document as “useful for Austria.”
Drosten for strict closure in Germany
Leopoldina experts, including prominent virologist Christian Drosten, had called for strict shutdown measures from December 14 to January 10, in particular extensive business closures and an extension of school holidays, in a position paper Tuesday. On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also campaigned for a tough blockade in Germany and praised Leopoldina’s demands. Public health in Germany is the responsibility of the federal states.
