Following the agreement with Great Britain, on Monday the European Union began the preliminary application of the Brexit trade pact from January 1. The ambassadors of the 27 member states tentatively said yes to the proposal and initiated a decision by written procedure, which should end on Tuesday (3 pm). Sebastian Fischer, spokesman for the German presidency of the Council of the EU, announced it on Twitter.
‼ ️ Green light for #BrexitDeal: The EU ambassadors have unanimously approved the provisional application of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement as of January 1, 2021.

Provisional application is necessary because there is no time for ratification by the European Parliament before the end of the year; must be made up after the New Year. The transition period after the UK leaves the EU in January will already expire on December 31, and Britain will also leave the internal market and the customs union. The contract aims to avoid a serious economic breakdown. On the British side, Parliament is expected to vote on December 30.
1250 pages long
Negotiators on both sides only agreed to the nearly 1,250-page deal at Christmas. The most important point is to ensure unlimited trade in goods without customs duties. In addition, the contract regulates, among other things, cooperation in the fields of fishing, air and road traffic, energy supply, the fight against crime and social security.
Despite the agreement, the economic ties between the two parties will be much less close in the future than they have been so far. For example, merchandise controls are necessary at borders, not least because proof of compliance with EU food safety regulations and compliance with product standards must be provided. (apa, dpa)
