Otto Barić was more than a football coach or team manager, he was an entertainer for young players and journalists. The Croatian died on Sunday at the age of 88 in Zagreb.
There are so many soccer coaches who insist on motivation and “new” methods. Those who claim to know the best tactics, to have a direct line with the players or to create an authority, of course only crowned with success. Otto Barić embodied all of that, indisputably. But it was much more than that. Just tie it on everyone’s nose, never had to. The facial expressions, the gestures, the angry outbursts, and the victories said a lot anyway.
He was a specialist who spoke in superlatives like “Otto Maximal.” And when he was sure of his cause, the Croat spoke of a “million percent”. Now that this voice has gone silent, Barić died on Sunday at the age of 88 in Zagreb. He succumbed to the consequences of the Covid disease.
