Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz confirms his refusal to accept children from Moria. Austria cannot welcome everyone.
Austria will not accept children from the burning refugee camp in Moria. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz reaffirmed his negative stance on this issue in a current European National Council hour on Wednesday and spoke in favor of local aid. Austria ranks third when it comes to hosting refugees in Europe and has done more than most other countries, he stressed according to the ÖVP deputies.
In this way, Kurz responded to the corresponding demands of NEOS, that with the selection of the title of the European lesson “Support a European asylum system and save the children of Moria, Mr. Chancellor!” they bet their point of view. The SPÖ and the Greens also joined in his call for humanity and solidarity, the latter speaking of a dissent in the coalition in relation to the admission of children from Moria.
The FPÖ turned against the admission of children from Moria, warning of such pull effects and, on the other hand, insisting on the effective protection of the EU’s external borders.
Kurz wants to help on the site
Despite justly existing emotions – in view of Moria’s suffering – it was legitimate to seek an objective access to this question, Sebastian Kurz sent forward. Austria cannot welcome everyone. “But we want to help,” said the Chancellor, emphasizing that the right help is on-site help. In this sense, Austria was one of the first countries to provide aid to Greece.
Responding to the accusation of lack of solidarity, Kurz noted that Austria had taken in more than 200,000 people in the last five years and had already issued positive notices to 3,700 children this year. Regarding distribution at the European level, the Chancellor recalled that 17 of the 27 EU member states would not participate in the admission of refugees from Moria, as recommended by Germany.
These include countries ruled by Social Democrats such as Sweden and Spain. Kurz made it clear that he supported a European approach to the issue of refugees and asylum, but was against a policy whereby people are lured to Europe under false beliefs and smugglers profit.
