In Bosnia, the Lipa refugee camp is burning near the town of Bihać in northern Bosnia. The migrants are said to have set fire to the countryside out of desperation.
The Lipa camp is located in Bosnia on the border with Croatia. Just a few days ago, the organizations raised the alarm: an estimated 3,000 people live there, exposed to the snow and cold, in makeshift huts. Due to low temperatures and a lack of infrastructure, they now threatened to freeze to death. Since there is no working water or electricity supply, campfires are often the only source of heat.
The camp was closed on Wednesday and the migrants were left with no prospect of recovery. First, several groups of migrants left the camp, then one group set the tents on fire, which turned into a huge fire. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), this fire is now under control. There have also been no reports of injuries, but most of the camp was destroyed.
No more accommodation
In reality, the closure of the camp was intended to carry out work on the water and electricity connections. Meanwhile, the migrants from the camp should have been housed in the Bihać room. According to local media, the authorities accompanied the migrants to the corridor, but there many citizens and the local police prevented access to the corridor; the refugees had to be returned to Lipa.
After the refugee camp was almost completely destroyed, there is no official accommodation for migrants in Bosnia. The Miral camp near Velika Kladuša, which has 1,000 refugees and a capacity of 700, is desperately overcrowded. Now there are also fears of clashes with the Croatian border police, because some of the migrants have announced that they want to move there.
