The chaos of Brexit, the pandemic crisis, the personal fight against the virus, the criticism from all sides, and now also the new Corona variant that is isolating Great Britain internationally. Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to be finally losing control on several fronts.
“Confidence in Johnson has dropped dramatically this year,” political scientist Professor Pete Dorey of Cardiff University tells KURIER. His handling of the pandemic and Brexit has raised “doubts about his competence”, “even with many conservative MPs.” Due to the “crisis collision” before Christmas, according to the BBC, he is now in danger of sinking into political chaos.
“With your back to the wall”
At the beginning of the week, there is the fear of supply bottlenecks in London: due to the new mutation of the virus, the port of Dover and the Eurotunnel are closed, several EU countries have stopped air traffic with Great Britain .
Johnson called an emergency cabinet meeting. Critics say the prime minister has his back to the wall, partly his fault, because he too often relies on “chaos management.” Labor Party leader Keir Starmer accused Johnson of “gross negligence” and said he was “falling behind again” when he announced a new Corona Warning Level 4 for London and other parts of south-east England on Saturday.
“You need strong leadership”
Three days earlier, Johnson had rejected requests for stricter rules; now he had to ban Christmas gatherings in Tier 4 regions and cut them from five to one day in the rest of England. “We need strong, clear and determined leadership,” says Starmer: Johnson is “so afraid of being unpopular” that he can’t or won’t make tough decisions.
Guto Harri, once Johnson’s communications director when London was mayor, confirms this to the POST. “He wants everyone to instinctively like him.”
