After the electoral victory of the left in Bolivia, the Judiciary annulled an arrest warrant against former President Evo Morales. The president of the Bolivian Court of Justice, Jorge Quino, said that the investigation into rebellion and terrorism violated Morales’ rights. This especially applies to your right to defense. The 61-year-old former president was not duly subpoenaed by the judiciary, Quino said.

Morales resigned in late 2019 after a re-election overshadowed by accusations of manipulation under pressure from mass protests and the military. The Bolivian prosecutor opened an investigation for rebellion and terrorism against the former president and issued an arrest warrant against him. Morales went into exile in Argentina.

Morales announces return

On Friday, the Bolivian electoral court confirmed the victory of leftist Luis Arce in the presidential elections. Arce, who like Morales belongs to the Movement for Socialism (MAS), obtained 55 percent of the votes.

Following the electoral victory of his party colleague, Morales had announced that he would return to Bolivia. With the lifting of the arrest warrant, an obstacle has now been removed. As the first indigenous president of Bolivia, Morales had ruled for 13 years before he assumed a transitional government. Arce had been Morales’ Secretary of Commerce for years.
