reStudents abducted by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria are once again free, according to a report on state television. However, according to Thursday night’s report, it was initially unclear if the 333 kidnapped students had been released. Extremists abducted you last Friday from a high school in Kankara, in the northern Katsina region. In an audio message, the group justified the act with an Islamophobic western education of the children.
A few hours earlier, the Islamist terror group Boko Haram had published a video. You can see children covered in dust and looking scared in front of a wooded area, describing themselves as students from the attacked Kankara school. A man with an assault rifle can be seen in the background of the largely blurred video, which was not officially confirmed by authorities. In front of the camera, an older boy asks for a peaceful settlement with the kidnappers. “Please send back all the troops that have come to help,” he pleads in a broken voice.
In the video of several minutes, which traveled the social networks of the country on Thursday, the voice of a stranger can also be heard. He emphasized the speech of the provincial government: “He’s in good health, look at them.” A boy also asked that the school guards be removed.
Boko Haram has repeatedly carried out similar attacks. In April 2014, he abducted 276 girls from a school in Chibok, Borno state. Many are still missing today. According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, hundreds of teachers, schoolchildren and students have been killed or injured since 2012. Many abducted children would be forced to work as child soldiers.
