In government circles “measures similar to the blockade” are being debated, reports “SN.at”. The traffic light commission could turn almost all of Austria red on Thursday, reports “DerStandard.at”.
In Germany the next blockade was announced in the afternoon, in France at night, and now it should only be a matter of time until the blockades are announced in Austria. In view of the explosion in the number of infections and increasingly subdued hospitals, further tightening of crown restrictions is likely to be imminent. There is talk in government circles of “blockade-like measures” that should be taken, the “Salzburger Nachrichten” reported on its online page Wednesday evening. The quasi-lockdown is intended to contain the pandemic.
The restriction of public life will not be as dramatic as in the spring, according to the media report, citing government circles (no official information from the Austrian government itself yet). Rather, Austria will take measures similar to what Germany will take from November 2.
The exact form of the measures is still being negotiated. The maximum government meets tomorrow Thursday with experts on the subject of “hospital capacities”. The results of the meeting will be live tomorrow starting at 2 pm (on VOL.AT). As part of these press statements, the government could announce official information about the upcoming “shutdown light” in Austria.
Almost all of Austria could be red as of Thursday
According to information from “Standard.at”, the traffic light in Corona could also glow almost completely red as of tomorrow Thursday. With the exception of seven districts in Carinthia, Austria could settle on the highest level of corona warning, it says in the middle with reference to a preliminary meeting on Wednesday evening for the meeting of the traffic light commission on Thursday.
Merkel telephoned briefly
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) telephoned German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday to coordinate efforts in the fight against the corona pandemic. “All of Europe is now in the middle of the second wave, so there are more restrictions and conditions similar to closures everywhere,” Kurz later emphasized to the APA.
Germany has also seen massive increases in the number of infections in the past ten days, Kurz said. As in Austria, capacities in hospitals are increasingly scarce and contact tracing is increasingly difficult. “Closer cooperation with Germany and the other European partners is therefore of particular importance. We want to move as closely as possible and keep the borders open,” declared the Chancellor.
On Thursday, the 27 EU heads of state and government will hold a video conference to discuss even closer cooperation in the fight against the pandemic. For example, new proposals from the EU Commission will be discussed.
