Billionaire Premier League game: Clubs likely to lose hundreds of millions of TV

Unlike in the Bundesliga, there are no concrete plans for the resumption of play in the English Premier League. But it doesn’t matter when and if it continues: the break will cost clubs many hundreds of millions of euros, even if there will still be games this season.

Clubs in the English Premier League may also have to pay TV channels of almost 390 million euros if the season is ended interrupted by the crown crisis. This was reported by the BBC.

Reimbursement of funds is expected because the games will be played without fans and at different times than originally planned. Premier League clubs are expected to receive a total of just under € 10.4 billion from institutions for the 2019 to 2022 cycle.

The league could only continue in June at the earliest, which would clearly be in line with the preferred time frame of transfer rights holders. Empty stadiums also contradict agreements. If the season doesn’t end, the loss would be significantly higher, according to interim Premier League chief Richard Masters. According to Masters, there would be a loss of more than a billion euros.

The UK government had told national sports organizations on Monday that sporting events could only take place behind closed doors from June 1 onwards for television broadcast.

Most recently, there was speculation about a league restart on June 12. The current plan for the richest league in the world is to play the remaining 92 games in a total of ten neutral locations away from the metro areas. The six weakest clubs at the table had opposed this. The sextet had threatened to vote in favor of this plan only if the descent was suspended.

From a sporting perspective, Jürgen Klopp in particular should expect a continuation of the season. The manager of the German team is at the top of the table with Liverpool FC for 25 points. For the first championship since 1990, the Reds are just two wins from the remaining nine games.
