After an increase in the number of locally transmitted corona infections in South Korea, fear of a possible destabilization of the situation is growing. Health authorities said Sunday that 34 additional cases had been identified on Saturday. This was the highest increase in four weeks in the country, which is considered a model due to its determined tests and quarantine measures.
The Korean Center for Disease Control (KCDC) said 26 of the new infections were national transmissions and eight cases were imported. South Korea has successfully fought the first major outbreak of the epidemic outside of China and has reported little or no infection in the country in recent weeks.
Before the outbreak, the country had loosened some restrictions. It is currently aiming at the total reopening of schools and shops. Extensive testing, intensive contact person monitoring, and tracking applications have helped Asia’s fourth largest economy manage the pandemic without curfews as in many other countries.
President Moon Jae-in warned of a second wave of the pandemic that could affect the country later this year. In a speech on the third anniversary of his inauguration, he cautioned against giving in on vigilance against the Covid 19 outbreak. “It doesn’t end until it ends.” At the same time, he tried to reassure the citizens. There is no reason to “stand still out of fear.” The crown situation in South Korea has recently entered a stabilization phase.
Moon announced an expansion of disease prevention. Authorities at the site must establish their own structures to react to infectious diseases with additional experts. In addition, specialized hospitals must be established to treat these diseases. This must be done quickly to prepare for a second wave of the epidemic, which experts say can be expected in the fall or winter.
Authorities are concerned about an increase in infections related to the visit of an infected male visitor to bars and nightclubs in an entertainment district in the Seoul metropolis. The affected person was only positive for the virus after visiting the clubs. As of Friday, 15 cases of infection were attributed to him. According to authorities, 14 new infections were confirmed in Seoul on Saturday. At first it was not clear if they were directly connected.
The city tries to locate around 1,500 people who may have been infected during a visit there. At the same time, he asked all the guests from last weekend to self-isolate for two weeks and get an infection test. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has ordered that all clubs, bars and other nightlife venues in the capital be temporarily closed.
Meanwhile, China reported coronavirus infection for the first time in more than a month in the Wuhan metropolis, where the pandemic outbreak was originally discovered. The case is one of 14 confirmed infections that China launched on Sunday. The last time an infection was found in Wuhan was April 3.
The Japanese government is considering prematurely lifting the Corona emergency in most of the country’s provinces. As Japanese media reported Sunday, citing government officials, the government may want to end the emergency in 34 of the 47 prefectures due to the pandemic until May 31, next Thursday, May 14.
The remaining provinces, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, as well as Osaka and Kyoto, continue to be considered areas where “special caution” is required. A state of emergency in Japan does not mean a foreclosure as harsh as in Europe. Citizens are only asked to stay home if possible.
