Bicycle path hazard: safe paths needed in Vienna-Döbling

In the current comparison of one-way street districts for cyclists, Vienna-Döbling ranks last of all Viennese districts. Only four of the 40 kilometers of one-way street are open to two-way bicycle traffic. In January, the Radeln initiative in Döbling passed 18 suggestions to the district president. Two of them were referred to MA 46 for examination. The initiative now criticizes the fact that a look at the adjacent Cottage or Schubert district in Districts 18 and 9 would show how easily the district could support bicycle use with open one-way streets.

“The old and the young cannot safely navigate Döbling on structurally separated cycle paths. Most cycle lanes are between cars, heavy traffic, trams or mixed with pedestrians. Structurally separated cycle lanes only exist in 1.3 kilometers, that’s a lot of little and a patchwork carpet, “says Peter Kühnberger, spokesman for Radeln in Döbling. There are 1,330,207 square meters of road in Vienna-Döbling. Related to this, only 0.2 percent of structurally separate bike lanes were built. “Right now, more and more people in Döbling are switching to bicycles and electric bikes. That is why there is an urgent need for safe cycle paths and a fairer distribution of space in the district,” says Kühnberger.

For a few days there have been posters with the inscription “Where are the safe cycle paths in Döbling?” in Krottenbachstrasse, Sieveringer Strasse, Sonnbergplatz, Hohe Warte and other streets. At an exit to Krottenbachstrasse and Billrothstrasse, two main cycle routes in the district but without cycling infrastructure, dozens of people joined the demands for safe cycle lanes in Döbling.
