Tickets for the Theatertreffen in Berlin are generally sold out, this time many more people have the opportunity to see one of the productions. Due to the Corona pandemic, the festival is held online. Several selected productions will be shown on the Internet until May 9.
According to festival director Yvonne Büdenhölzer, the broadcast is not a 100% replacement, but it opens up new opportunities. “Moving theatrical art one by one on the Internet is losing a lot,” he said. “But there is also potential. We have to find out what we can gain.”
It could reach new target groups, for example. All recordings will be shown for free. “We only ask for donations for artists, on a voluntary basis,” Büdenhölzer told the German Press Agency. Every year, a jury selects the “Ten Most Notable Productions” from German-speaking countries for the theater meeting. Florentina Holzinger’s “TANZ” was invited from Austria this year.
Throughout Germany, theaters are currently closed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. Houses are losing significant income, especially private theaters fear for their existence. Several theaters are now trying to show old recordings online. Theatertreffen also hosted an online show that opened with a video message on Friday night.
A total of six productions are shown. It started with “Hamlet” from the Schauspielhaus Bochum. Sandra Hüller (“Toni Erdmann”) plays the lead role. In the next few days, a sample recording of “Anatomy of a Suicide” by the German Schauspielhaus Hamburg and, for example, the co-production “Chinchilla Arschloch, waswas” by the Rimini Protokoll theater collective will be shown. Various online discussions are also planned.
“Of course, we know that the work we are showing now was not created for the web,” said Büdenhölzer. “But we do it anyway because we want to point out:” We are there, we are also systemically important. “
“There are already many activists who are concerned with aesthetic possibilities and artistic reach on the Internet,” said Büdenhölzer. “For example, the ‘Theater und Netz’ conference organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Nachtkritik.de has been around for a long time.”
Because all stages and festivals are forced to search for alternatives on the Internet, something suddenly becomes part of the daily work in dramas and art directors who previously only received minimal treatment. “You can say that theaters and artists are very creative in dealing with the crisis,” said Büdenhölzer. “And maybe a job that was only created online will be invited to the next theater meeting.”
