Former Prime Minister Wilmès participated in the Council of Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg last week, after which her Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg tested positive.
Belgian Foreign Minister and until recently Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès are sicker with coronavirus than previously thought. On Thursday morning she was admitted to the intensive care unit of an unidentified Brussels hospital. “His condition is stable but requires professional attention,” his spokesman said. He is conscious and in a good mood.
The 45-year-old Brussels liberal participated in the EU Council of Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg on Monday a week ago. Four days later he felt “suspicious symptoms” and a test confirmed his infection with the coronavirus. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg also tested positive after this council meeting. He did not have to be admitted to the hospital and said he was fine. On the occasion of the announcement of the positive result of her test, Wilmès declared that she suspected that she could have been infected “in the family environment”.
More than 13,000 cases in Belgium on Wednesday
As in the spring, the pandemic hits Belgium with enormous force. The state health authority announced a new record of 13,227 confirmed cases of infection on Thursday. This is also due to the increase in testing in a week by 35 percent to around 60,000 per day. However, the exponential spread of the epidemic cannot be denied, as shown by the evolution of hospital admissions (319 per day on average the previous week, which corresponds to almost doubling in a week) and shows the rate of positive tests.
On a weekly average, 16 percent of all tests across the country are currently positive, but in the province of Liège this is the case for one in four. Hospitals in the city of Liège have started transferring intensive care patients to other provinces because their intensive care units are full.
