A major fire in the port of Beirut caused panic in the Lebanese capital five weeks after the devastating explosion. On Thursday, thick clouds of smoke covered the area. According to the army, an oil and car tire warehouse caught fire. The army is in action with firefighting helicopters. Residents were asked to leave the surrounding neighborhoods.
The cause of the fire was unclear. Initially, there was no information on possible victims either. Eyewitnesses posted videos of the flames on the Internet. “A crazy fire in the port is causing panic throughout Beirut. We just don’t have any respite,” Human Rights Watch researcher Aya Majzoub wrote on Twitter. “We just can’t take that much trauma,” wrote another user. Many residents of the city are still under the impact of the explosion in early August, which devastated much of Beirut.

More than 190 dead in Beirut
More than 190 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured in the August 4 explosion. Much of the port and its surroundings were completely destroyed. The explosion is said to have been triggered by large amounts of the highly explosive chemical ammonium nitrate that had been stored in the port for years.
