On Wednesday, Salzburg lost the fourth game of the Champions League group stage to Bayern Munich 3-1. The Germans fix their place in the round of 16: the Bulls remain at the bottom of the table in Group A.
Red Bull Salzburg conceded a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Football Champions League on Wednesday. With hits from Robert Lewandowski (43rd), Leroy Sane (68th) and Kingsley Coman (52nd), the defending German champion arranged an early entry into the round of 16 after four group games.
Berisha scores again against Bayern
Mergim Berisha, who scored in the first leg, scored a well-deserved goal for the valiant Salzburg team (73rd). “If we are more focused on the goal, we do one or two more things,” said the Bavarian after the game. The police had enough opportunities to do so.
After the third consecutive defeat in the premier class, the Mozartstadters have a point in Group A, on December 2 follows the supposedly decisive match at Lok in Moscow (0-0 at Atlético de Madrid) for the international stop.
For Salzburg in group A anything is possible
Salzburg’s chances of advancing are intact given that they are four points behind second Atletico Madrid (0-0 against Lok Moscow) before the final two rounds of Group A. However, they will need the help of Bavaria. On December 1, Jesse Marsch’s team could take third place with a victory in Moscow, which would mean a move to the Europa League.
Minute of silence for Maradona
Once again in this special year 2020, Salzburg kicked off the game after a minute of silence. On Wednesday the late Argentine soccer icon Diego Maradona (60) was commemorated.
The Bulls acted a little more defensively than in the first leg
Marsch decided three weeks after the 2: 6, when his team collapsed at the finish, again because of the gritty, race-intensive approach, but with a slightly more defensive orientation. His eleven, unchanged in terms of personnel compared to the first duel, played in an oddball with Mergim Berisha as the hanging point behind Sekou Koita.
The local team had the first maximum chances. After a rebound in the middle, Serge Gnabry volleyed just off goal (10th). The guests did not hide, they energetically got into the duels and thus ensured an open exchange of blows in the match at the Munich Allianz Arena, which was played without spectators for the crown.
Salzburg did not take advantage of several opportunities
A bad pass from David Alaba gave the Salzburgs their first maximum chances in the quarter hour: Koita beat Berisha, who failed in a heads-up against Manuel Neuer. Enock Mwepu did not hit the ball correctly when the shot was made (15th).
Szoboszlai’s nerves fail
The scene seemed to give the stranger a boost. The match was even in long stretches, the offensive players from Salzburg managed several times to move the Bayern defense, which had been weakened in terms of personnel. In the 35th minute Dominik Szoboszlai was 1-0 on his foot: Berisha saw Hungary completely free in the middle, but the highly talented man crashed the synthetic leather into the clouds in front of Neuer.
Lewandowski dusts himself – 1-0
Despite the increased pace, Bayern had only two half chances from Lewandowski (27th, 29th), but still went into the break with a 1-0 lead. Salzburg goalkeeper Cican Stankovic could only let a full shot from Thomas Müller bounce forward, Lewandowski dusted off a special goal.
With his 71st goal in the Champions League, the Pole tied third-placed Spanish Raúl González for the all-time top scorer. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (131) and Lionel Messi (118) have scored more frequently in the premier class.
Bayern controlled the game
After the optimal finish, Bayern got off to an optimal start in the second half: Coman dribbled towards the middle in the 52nd minute, drifted away from the area and Wöber deflected the shot in an unsustainable for Stankovic – 0: 2
Hansi Flick’s team had everything under control then, Marc Roca’s yellow and red card after the second yellow foul on Zlatko Junzovic (66th) made the game only partially exciting. Coman served substitute Sane with a measured flank on Salzburg’s messy defensive center, which headed for a 3-0 (68) lead.
The exploitation of possibilities decides the duel
In terms of efficiency, the class difference was more evident that day. This was demonstrated by a missed triple chance when Salzburg failed each time over Neuer (70th). Three minutes later, after a low cross from Rasmus Kristensen, Berisha scored the well-deserved consolation goal.
