A gang of swindlers from Upper Austria and Styria brought back gold jewelry for up to a quarter of its real value.

An international gang of scammers have stolen gold jewelry from customers for up to a quarter of its real value by misusing the well-known television title “Bars für Rares” in Upper Austria and Styria. Police in Frankenmarkt (Vöcklabruck district) have investigated five suspects with the Vienna LKA, Upper Austrian police reported on Monday. The damage is at least in the five-digit euro range. So far eleven victims were known.

From June to August 2020, the band, two Poles (40 and 19 years old), two Germans (39 and 20 years old) and a 39 year old of unknown origin, placed quarter-page ads with the motto of the series in a newspaper Austrian. He announced the purchase of gold jewelry in combination with fur coats at the highest prices. The scammers rented a location in the Vöcklabruck district to do business.

It was intended that the victims would receive up to 2,500 euros for their fur coats, supposedly impossible to sell. Because of the promised quantity, they accepted the low purchase price of the valuables. Fur coats were never bought after.
