Banking scandal: also a parish among the victims

There is not a day that another chapter is not written in the Mattersburg banking scandal. Immediately before the collapse of the Commerzialbank, the parish of Fortenstein (a place with around 3,000 residents) moved its account to the Mattersburg Institute of all places. They should have been deposits of 250,000 euros, wrote the “Standard”. The bank even kept money from a deceased person, it became known yesterday Wednesday.

In the case of the Fortenstein church, everything disappeared except for the 100,000 euros insured, including donations and offerings. The Allianz Investment Bank, which was invested in Mattersburgers, is said to be no less than three million euros. Both victims had joined the process.

Apparently, there was no stop even at the money for the dead. Apparently, the questioning of former bank chief Martin Pucher on July 17 also referred to between three and four million euros, which came from the savings accounts of a customer who had died in the meantime. According to Pucher, after the client’s death, the bank’s legitimate savings accounts were left behind and the millions deposited in them were debited “over time” from the anonymous savings accounts. His assistant accomplished that, Pucher said.

The deceased’s money remained in the bank and was used to service the delinquent loans. The client was a businessman from Lower Austria and more recently had a stake in a metallurgical company of whose board he was a member. He died in 2015 at the age of 67.

Among other banks, there is also a Carinthian Raiffeisenbank among the Commerzialbank Mattersburg victims: Raika Althofen-Guttaring recently confirmed to the “Kleine Zeitung” that “it had its own assessment (mainly time deposits) at the Commerzialbank Mattersburg”. In a written statement, management stated: “Even if this self-assessment fails completely, this has no effect on the business or banking operations of Raiffeisenbank Althofen-Guttaring.”

There was no information on the exact amount of the loss, the newspaper wrote about an amount under a single-digit million.
