A 51-year-old tourist skier was buried by an avalanche in the Albona ski area in Vorarlberg. He could only recover dead.

A tourist skier died Monday in an avalanche accident in Vorarlberg. In the morning I had climbed alone from Stuben am Arlberg through the still closed Albona ski resort to Albonagrat. The 61-year-old wanted to go back from there on the “Albona North Face” track. But as he drove up the steep incline, he dropped a slab. He was dragged and buried about 400 meters away, police said Tuesday.

Ski Tourists Found Dead

Two snowboarders who were doing the same route noticed the avalanche. They searched for the avalanche cone with Avalanche Search Devices (LVS). After they failed to receive a signal, they notified a snowcat driver and rescuers.

More than 50 mountain rescuers, avalanche dogs and the Bludenz Alpine Police were searching for the injured man, who police say was an experienced skier. An avalanche dog was finally able to locate the buried tourist. At 4:55 pm he was found at a depth of three meters. He could only recover dead.
