Like little works of art, postage stamps reflect the times. Therefore, the Austrian Post has decided to issue a special stamp on the very important issue of 2020 – COVID-19. The postage stamp was made from toilet paper, a material that accumulated in large quantities around the world during the spring and even caused supermarket shelves to empty due to the sharp increase in demand.
“With the Corona stamp, we not only want to issue an original block of stamps that we will remember this year, but also support those who have been particularly affected by this crisis. The surcharge of 2.75 euros per stamp goes to the ORF Licht ins Dunkel campaign. A third of each goes to the Caritas and Kronen Zeitung Corona emergency fund, UNICEF Austria and other Licht ins Dunkel projects, “explains Postmaster General DI Dr. Georg Pölzl.

The tampon is the shape and size of a standard toilet paper and is a total of four inches long. If you place ten stamp blocks next to each other, you get a minimum distance of one meter, or the length of a baby elephant. The famous little animal is also featured on the stamp.
The stamp has a face value of 2.75 euros and a surcharge of the same amount and, like commercially available toilet paper, can be separated from the rest of the stamp block on the perforated line. The Corona seal consists of 3-ply toilet paper, with a self-adhesive film underneath, so it is not necessary to moisten the seal, but to remove it carefully.
The brand design comes from Marion Füllerer, the toilet paper for the postage stamp was manufactured by Essity Austria in Pernitz from recycled waste paper and printed by Variuscard. The Austrian Post already developed the idea for this brand in spring, but sourcing materials posed a particular challenge: Household toilet paper was either sold for a long time or was difficult to obtain in such quantities.
