Austrian optimism has sunk to a record low. In the latest survey of its kind conducted by the Linz IMAS opinion research institute, only 24 percent had overall confidence in the next twelve months. This is the lowest value in surveys conducted since 1972, 48 years ago.

The current state of mind differs not entirely unexpectedly from that before the start of the Corona crisis. But the current optimism value for September is also 14 percentage points below that of the July survey. 37 percent of the last 1,014 respondents are skeptical about the near future and another 35 percent are concerned. Women, people from the weaker social classes and the generation 60 and over are particularly concerned.

Economic pessimism

On the specific question of assessing future economic development, pessimism also prevailed: 54 percent believe it will deteriorate. There hasn’t been a more negative mood since 2015. Currently, only twelve percent expect an improvement.

Furthermore, after a short counter-trend in 2018/19, the feeling of satisfaction with life was negative again: 48 percent of respondents do not have the impression that most people in Austria are satisfied with their life 30 percent think so. Such a low value has not been measured since 2015.
