Every day there are new deaths of corona-infected people in Austria. Doctors warn that if hospitals are overloaded, there is the risk of many more.

More than 1,500 patients with crown in the hospital
Because although only less than five percent of those infected need to be treated in hospitals, Austrian hospitals could quickly reach their capacity limits. 1,345 people are currently treated in normal wards, while 224 Covid 19 patients must be treated in intensive care.
The AGES currently shows enough reserves for the beds, currently 9,217 beds in normal and 629 beds in intensive care units are still available. But is it really so? Intensive medical care is not yet about to collapse, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) currently says. But: “This can change rapidly with exponential increase.”
“That is what worries me most at this time: today there have been 169 more hospitalizations, including 21 more in intensive care units. The number of patients has increased dramatically in recent days,” said the minister on Wednesday afternoon. Health on Twitter.
Will it reach its capacity limits soon?
At the same time, the Austrian Society for Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine (ÖGARI) warns that regional bottlenecks are definitely occurring and notes that the number of intensive care beds alone is not significant. Because these “are only relevant for care if they can also be used by specialized medical and health personnel.”
“The fact that reports are already coming in from various federal states that the limits of their intensive care capacity will soon be reached gives a picture of the real situation in hospitals,” says ÖGARI.
It is imperative to avoid it: “The highest priority of the moment is not to overload our health system. This requires the help of all,” warned the governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer, who also announced that the measures would be tightened.
There’s no way to avoid it “
From Tuesday to Wednesday alone, 22 deaths of infected people were reported. If there is a bottleneck in the medical supply, then Austria threatens much worse: in a situation where resources are overloaded, there is also “a higher rate of preventable deaths”, according to the specialized society.
Remarkable containment of new infections is more the order of the day, Klaus Markstaller, President of ÖGARI: “For all of us, as challenging as it may be for the coming months, to implement known prevention measures much more consistently than before, both in private and in this public space. You cannot avoid strict hand hygiene, keep your distance, reduce contacts to an absolutely necessary level and protect your mouth and nose. “
