Interior Minister Nehammer announced that internal border controls with Slovenia and Hungary will take place between November 12, 2020 and May 11, 2021.
In a press release on Wednesday, he said that Interior Minister Karl Nehammer reported that Austria would carry out internal border checks at the Austrian borders with Slovenia and Hungary from November 12, 2020 to and including May 11, 2021. . The reasons for this are, on the one hand, the “persistent migratory pressure, the preservation of internal security and the tense situation surrounding the corona pandemic.”
The notification letter from the Minister of the Interior, in which he informs about internal border controls, was sent to the Vice-President of the European Commission, the EU Commissioner for the Interior, the President of the European Parliament, the General Secretariat of the Council and to the Ministers of the Interior of the EU and the signatory Schengen States.
Responsible persons in affected neighboring countries were also informed.
“In addition, my counterparts from Slovenia and Hungary were informed about Austria’s decision to carry out internal border controls for another six months,” said Interior Minister Nehammer.
Legal base
Articles 25 to 27 of EU Regulation 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code) serve as the legal basis for internal border controls. Indeed, the Schengen Borders Code allows for the introduction of border controls “for the foreseeable duration of the serious threat” in cases where public safety is threatened.
Consequently, the 26 Schengen countries can control their internal borders, provided the EU Commission is informed in time.
