Jürgen Melzer and his French doubles partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin will start the ATP Finals in London on Monday (not before 7pm).
The duo, who fixed their participation in the Masters on Friday with the final in Sofia, will face the first seeds of the US Open Mate Pavic / Bruno Soares (CRO / BRA) in the group “Bob Bryan”. Other opponents in the group are Marcel Granollers / Horacio Zeballos (ESP / ARG-4) and John Peers / Michael Venus (AUS / NZL-6).
“What are you saying, Edouard? I can’t hear you,” Melzer posted on Instagram under a photo of his double partner whispering something behind the ball. “Yes, we are going to London !!!” said the happy 39-year-old Austrian who achieved his last big goal by entering London.
Starting in February 2021, Melzer will switch sides from active to sporting director for the Austrian Tennis Association.
Opportunity for revenge
With Pavic / Soares, the Austro-French pairing has an open bill. A week ago Melzer / Roger-Vasselin lost in the Paris-Bercy semifinals with 3: 6.6: 7 (4). Melzer / Roger-Vasselin had moved into a good starting position for last place in London with the title at the ATP 500 tournament in St. Petersburg.
They surrendered the final in Sofia against their direct competitors for last place, Jamie Murray / Neal Skupski (GBR), without a fight after reaching the final, to have more time to prepare and acclimatise to quarantine in London. Besides Dominic Thiem, Melzer is another Austrian contribution in London. It is his third appearance after 2010 and 2011.
In the “Mike Bryan” pool, which starts Sunday, French Open winners Kevin Krawietz / Andreas Mies (GER-3) face Wesley Koolhof / Nikola Mektic (NED / CRO-5) and winners of the French Open. Australia. Rajeev Ram / Joe Salisbury (USA / GBR-2) over Lukasz Kubot / Marcelo Melo (POL / BRA-7).
