Truck trailer and cargo removed; there was no major damage to the tunnel

Salzburg (OTS) The truck trailer set on fire in the Tauern tunnel fire on the A 10, as well as the load of disinfectants, could be removed from the tunnel shortly before noon. ASFINAG experts and an external appraiser are present from 11:30 am to assess the damage to the facilities and the structure. The first damage has already been repaired by ASFINAG operating technology, the cables and lighting still need to be replaced. Inspection of the structure itself did not reveal any serious damage to the tunnel wall and false ceiling, only partial flaking of the concrete.

So presumably the tunnel can be reopened in the direction of Salzburg around 4pm after the first repairs have been completed. At the moment, one lane will be available, the speed will be limited to 60 km / h in view of the ongoing works in the tunnel. In the direction of Villach, ASFINAG was able to reopen the tunnel to traffic at 8 am

For lorry traffic heading to Salzburg, ASFINAG has established a large detour from the Villach junction via the A 2 Südautobahn and the A 9 Pyhrnautobahn to the dispatch. Cars have to leave the A 10 at St. Michael im Lungau and return to Flachauwinkel.

Perfect alert, perfect use

The truck caught fire shortly before 6 a.m., the driver took his vehicle into a breakdown bay, disconnected the tractor, and escaped the tunnel in time after trying to put out the fire to no avail. This correct behavior and the rapid response – the emergency services and the ASFINAG employees reached the scene of the fire in a few minutes -, in combination with the modern safety equipment in the tunnel, significantly contributed to the minimal damage to the tunnel .
