A police spokesman said Sunday that people in five villages were attacked at the same time. More than 300 armed men were involved in the attacks in Katsina state. The attacks could have been an act of retaliation against villagers who opposed criminals in northwestern Nigeria. “We are combing the forest to catch supporters of the attack,” said the police spokesman.

In the region there are repeated attacks and raids, gangs rob villages or kidnap people and demand ransom. The police and the army have been trying to tackle this for some time.
