When can you expect a vaccine in Austria? How much will it cost and how does the approval process work? An overview of the path, not too long, to the completion of the vaccination.
15 years – that’s how long it took to develop the HPV or rotavirus vaccine. It took almost twice as long before there was a live flu vaccine. Now it could only be months before a coronavirus vaccine hits the market. There was a reason why experts on Tuesday spoke of a “milestone in terms of speed.” At an event organized by the Austrian Association of Vaccine Manufacturers (ÖVIH), they outlined the path from development to population distribution. “Die Presse” summarizes the most important questions and answers:
How many vaccines are currently being developed?
Renee Gallo-Daniel, President of ÖHIV, reported that 193 candidate vaccines are currently being worked on around the world. However, 151 of them are still in preclinical research, for example in animals or “in vitro”, that is, in a test tube. 42 vaccines are already being investigated in human clinical studies, 10 of them in the third and final phase. Two candidates have already entered the approval process of the pharmaceutical agency. These are the AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.
AstraZeneca, which works with the University of Oxford, began ongoing review with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on October 1, and the Pfizer-BioNTech product began the process six days later.
