In recent days, there has been a huge influx of minimal social security, Social Affairs Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) reported on Wednesday in the Budget Committee. Exact figures are not yet available, one works on optimizing data flow with countries. The social minister believes that more measures are needed to prevent people from falling into poverty as a result of the crown crisis.

“It is clear to me that what we have so far is not enough,” Anschober said according to parliamentary correspondence, although the various hardship funds, increased emergency aid and short-term work model had already covered a wide range net. Stabilization of the labor market is of central importance in dealing with the crisis. Furthermore, a “reorganization of financial flows” was needed. The solidarity that has become increasingly visible in the crisis should be carried over the next few months, he said. The financing of the crisis should not be done at the expense of the workers.

It is not yet possible to say how the pandemic will affect social security. In either case, massive revenue losses can be expected. It is evident, according to Anschober, that the cost of pharmaceuticals in the Austrian Health Insurance Fund increased by 13 percent in the first quarter of 2020, apparently “hamstering” occurred.

Anschober intends to continue working on nursing reform, with a delay of around five months, in September, and the main launch event of the “Task Force Nursing” will take place in October. Target’s Steering Committee could start in 2021. The crown crisis made weaknesses in the nursing sector particularly clear, Anschober said, which could increase pressure for reform.
