Analysis: here’s what Marco Rossi’s first NHL contract really means

Marco Rossi’s next step on the road to the NHL has been taken. On Friday, Vorarlberger signed his entry-level contract (all info >>>).

But how good is your contract really?

LAOLA1-Scout Bernd Freimüller analyzes:

The key data (given):

  • Entry-level offer for 3 years
  • $ 925,000 top salary, of course, could have been lower, but that was never realistic.
  • Two-way contract, AHL salary is $ 80,000
  • Signing bonus of $ 92,500 (ten percent of annual salary)

With nine or fewer NHL games, this contract would be postponed for a year. If I were to go to AHL, Rossi would not have to go through the waivers. All typical of these types of entry-level offerings.

What had to be negotiated were the bonuses for signing. That is $ 850,000 a year. Rossi’s total three-year contract package is $ 5.325 million. However, to do this, you would have to achieve all the bonus goals each year, which is neither practical nor theoretical. So, of course, each player can only become “Rookie of the Year” once, if at all.

But how do you get these numbers? Were your agent Serge Payer and wild GM Bill Guerin negotiated freely?

Well, this is where Rossi’s draft position ranks ninth. This is completely irrelevant to if and when he joins the NHL, but in practice it is relevant for bonuses. These can be freely traded up to the ceiling of 2.85 million per year, but of course there is room below that and certain parameters are required for it. In the weeks after the draft, some directional pegs were introduced, albeit widely spaced.

Alexis Lafreniere signed with the Rangers, the top pick in the last draft also earned the maximum possible of 2.85 million per year.

Quinton Byfield, the No. 2 draft pick, was just below that, with $ 2.65 million a year from the LA Kings.

Those were the two players who were selected before Rossi and who have received contracts so far.

The next corner post was Defender Kaiden Guhle, drawn 16th by Montreal. Your annual bonuses can reach $ 420,000.

So Rossi is in between these numbers, which makes sense with his draft status. And again: these amounts are theoretically the maximum achievable figures. That is to say. Guhle might as well make more money from his bonuses than Lafreniere or Byfield.

A total of nine cracks from the last draft of the year have signed entry-level deals so far. From the first round Tyson Foerster (Philadelphia, 23rd pick), Jake Neighbors (St. Louis, 26) and Ozzy Wiesblatt (San Jose, 31). There are also Vasili Ponomarev (Carolina, second round) and Zayde Wisdom (Philadelphia, fourth round). Only Lafreniere, Byfield, Rossi and Foerster got the maximum possible base salary of 925,000.

What does Rossi’s contract mean for Minnesota?

The Wild is currently capped at nearly $ 79 million. Rossi’s contract is not yet listed, he is currently considered a “non-roster forward.” But if he makes it to the NHL, the $ 925,000 will come naturally. Guerin would also have to plan for performance bonuses in some way, but there he could exceed the salary cap of $ 81.5 million by a total of 7.5 percent. You can’t completely lose sight of him, because KHL superstar Kirill Kaprizov (Rossi’s potential linemate?) Could hit $ 925,000 in bonuses.

All arithmetic games at a time when it’s not even clear if and when the NHL will start. Guerin still has enough time to work on his squad. Above all, the $ 4 million for center Victor Rask (still under a two-year contract) must be hard on his stomach.

What’s next for Marco Rossi?

One point from the last collective agreement (or related memorandum) does not apply to Rossi. NHL cracks have to give up 10 percent of their salary due to Covid, which will be returned to them in later years. However, this does not apply to entry-level contracts.

After the draft and the conclusion of the contract, the next point is surely game practice. I look forward to the announcement in the next few days that Rossi will play provisionally for the ZSC Lions. Will he be available to the Austrian U20 team at the November tournament and at the Youth World Cup? I don’t trust myself to make a prediction …
