The new state opera director’s program reads like a who’s who of directors’ theater in recent decades. Calixto Bieito, Hans Neuenfels, Frank Castorf, Barrie Kosky, Simon Stone, Kirill Serebrennikov. Everyone who was in vogue between Stuttgart, Berlin, Paris, Salzburg and London now moves to Vienna late.
It seems almost didactic when Bogdan Roščić lets the Viennese audience stop and shows which directors dominated the opera stage. Of course, these directors had already worked at the Haus am Ring in isolated cases, but like Roščić here, the Wagner, Mozart, Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Puccini centerpieces have been picturesquely remodeled, it has a new quality . It is questionable whether the conservatively tuned local audience will enjoy it. To a certain extent, as a peace offer, you can also update the traditional works of Schenk and Ponnelle, plus Starglanz comes from the stage (the Netrebkos and Kaufmanns are there). Some employed ensemble singers constantly have what it takes to be a crowd favorite, and the new music director is supposed to ensure continuous quality.
Roščić clearly has ambitions. The State Opera should once again be on top of the world. So wherever there is room.
