More than a third bicycle sold is an electric bicycle. Overconfidence and lack of exercise take their revenge: this year, eleven people in Austria were killed in accidents involving electric bicycles.

The KfV confirms in a study that such a general trend also has its drawbacks: Eleven people were killed in electric bicycle accidents this year. It is not uncommon for older semesters to be involved, as KfV states: In 2019, according to traffic accident statistics from Statistics Austria, 31.7 percent of those involved in electric bicycle accidents were over 64 years old. 57.9 percent of electric bicycle or electric scooter drivers involved in accidents were between the ages of 25 and 64. In comparison, the proportion of seniors who had an accident with a normal bicycle is much lower (17.8 percent). Traffic accident statistics do not distinguish between electric road and mountain bikes, but both variants are naturally affected.
