American author Louise Glück published her first volume of poetry 52 years ago; he has now received the highest honor for his work: the Nobel Prize for Literature. This was announced by the Swedish Academy.
For her “unmistakable poetic voice,” American writer Louise Glück is awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy in Stockholm declared that the 77-year-old is making individual existence a universal experience.
In Germany, the poet and essayist is probably a bit unknown to most. Only two of his works are available in German: the poetry collections “Averno” (2007), in which he deals with the play of mythology and man, and “Wilde Iris” (2008) on the cycle of nature and human existence.
Pulitzer Prize for “Wild Iris”
In 1968 he published his first volume of poems: “Primogénito”. Glück has received numerous high-level awards. For “Wilde Iris” he received the Pulitzer Prize.
In contrast, the Judeo-American poet has been one of her homeland’s most recognized poets for decades. For 2003/2004 she was named “Poet Laureate” of the United States. She is currently a writer-in-residence at Yale University and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Even when a girl wrote poetry
Born in New York on April 22, 1943, Glück attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University, both in New York, but left without a degree. I had already written poetry when I was a child.
“She takes her readers on a journey into her deepest and most intimate feelings in her poems, which many people can read and understand,” describes the Poetry Foundation. After her debut in 1968, the current literature teacher published eleven more volumes of poetry and several books with essays on poetry.
Last year’s honor sparked a protest
Glück follows the Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk and the Austrian Peter Handke; they were honored last year. Handke’s honor had sparked protests because he had made a name for himself as a Serbian lawyer during the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s. Many accuse him of having defended war crimes.
The Literature Prize is the fourth Nobel Prize awarded this week. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded on Friday and the Economics Prize on Monday.
Traditional awards ceremony canceled
Due to the crown pandemic, the traditional awards ceremony in Stockholm in December was canceled as a precaution; however, the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo will take place as usual, but on a smaller scale.
The Nobel prizes are named after the Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). In his will, he stated that his estate would become the financial basis for five international awards in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, medicine and peace. In 1968, an economics prize was launched in memory of Nobel.
