AMD Promises: More Ryzen Laptops Coming Soon!

amd-renoirIn the past two weeks, new hardware introductions have been primarily related to notebooks. AMD introduced the first laptops with Ryzen Mobile or Renoir processors, Intel responded with Comet Lake-H. All three players joined NVIDIA and switched their mobile graphics cards to super update.

There has also been widespread discussion in recent days about which processors are paired with which GPUs and which are not. Apparently, Intel can be sure of working with NVIDIA because laptops with Comet Lake H processors are also paired with a GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q and GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q. We observed the first mentioned combination along with an Intel Core i7-10875H on the Gigabyte AORUS 15G (test).

Meanwhile, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q is used on the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (test) in conjunction with the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS. This is currently the fastest combination of a Renoir processor and a dedicated graphics card. There is no laptop with a Renoir processor and a GeForce RTX 2070 (Max-Q).

For the foreseeable future, there will be no notebooks with a Renoir processor and a faster NVIDIA graphics card. Frank Azor, chief gaming solutions architect at AMD, confirmed this on Twitter:

It is unknown why the combination of a stronger NVIDIA dedicated GPU with an AMD Renoir processor will not exist at the moment. The combination of a Renoir processor and a Radeon RX 5500M, Radeon RX 5600M or Radeon RX 5700M is also currently not in sight.

A look at the price comparison shows 68 notebooks with Renoir processors. At least 130 systems with Comet Lake-H are already on the list. Much less are currently available. There are currently ten laptops available with a Comet Lake-H; We only talk about six for Renoir processors, five of which are models of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14.

Frank Azor also has an explanation: The current situation around the corona virus contributes to delays in the market launch. However, other laptops with a Renoir processor will be available soon.

Except for the lack of justification for the non-existent range of notebooks with a Renoir processor and a faster discrete graphics card, the current delays in market launch can be understood. It doesn’t look much better at Intel right now. However, the impression is growing that AMD, along with its partners, still cannot move as freely in component selection as is the case with Intel. Basically there is nothing against combining a Renoir processor with a GeForce RTX 2070/2080 (Max-Q).

We will soon see how far the collaboration between Intel and NVIDIA and AMD and NVIDIA will go. Along with GeForce Mobile Super Refresh, NVIDIA introduced the Max-Q Dynamic Boost. It is a technology in which power can be dynamically assigned between components. At AMD, this technology is called SmartShift. SmartShift only works between an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU. Max-Q Dynamic Boost should work with both an Intel and an AMD processor and should be platform independent. Now we will have to see to what extent NVIDIA and AMD will work together.
