In Austria, stricter measures against the coronavirus will be applied again from Monday. Here is a summary of the restrictions on celebrations, entertainment and gastronomy.

Starting today, Monday at 0.00 hours, new restrictions will come into force in the fight against coronavirus and Covid-19, which will affect private celebrations, leisure activities, restaurants and markets and fairs. The federal government hopes to avoid a second blockade for itself and the population.

At private events without assigned and marked seating, only ten people are allowed instead of the 50 above. According to the Ministry of Health, this includes “group social activities”, for example, yoga courses, Zumba lessons, rounds of cards and game nights, but also film screenings, exhibitions, weddings and baptisms, confirmations and celebrations of the first communion. The only exceptions are funerals.

Recommendations for private parties

The new upper limits (a maximum of 100 people allowed outdoors for non-professionally organized events without a safety concept) do not apply in the professional area, that is, not for professional sport. The government explicitly excludes private apartments for which there are no limits, only the recommendation not to receive excessive guests.

In addition, the requirement of the mask is reinforced. Mouth and nose protection must now also be used outdoors in all markets and trade shows, and in indoor restaurants, for both customers and staff. The mask can only be removed from the host in the seat, with a maximum of ten people per table. The 1:00 am curfew, which has been binding for a long time, now also applies to closed events – private rental clubs or pubs.

Listeners are allowed at court hearings

Tighter measures to contain the corona virus will not have any new effect on judicial operations for the time being. Regardless of the restrictions on the events taking place on Monday, the court hearings will not only remain open to the media, but will also be accessible to interested audiences, the so-called lapwing. The Justice Ministry made this clear in the APA request.

“Restrictions on events are not transferable to judicial operations, because the principle of publicity of parties in negotiations can only be restricted for the reasons provided by law: the code of civil procedure or the code of criminal procedure,” he said the ministry. To protect against Covid-19, security measures in court buildings and negotiating rooms (wearing mouth and nose protection in the negotiation room, observing distance rules, observing hygiene regulations) have been around for a long time, it was emphasized.

“To that end, there are certainly numerical restrictions on the number of listeners in court, depending on the size of the respective courtroom,” the Justice Ministry said. However, these restrictions would be determined by the direction of the respective agency within the framework of the house rules or by the decision-making body, the respective judge, within the framework of the judicial police.
