Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is generally not easily angered, but on Wednesday afternoon he looked very different. The European Committee of the Bundestag met, it was about the crisis in Belarus and the question of how Germany should behave, also towards Russia, the protective power of the controversial Belarusian head of state Alexander Lukashenko. Maas was violently attacked from various sides.
First, the SPD politician had to listen to a speech by the left-wing MP Diether Dehm, who defended Russia across the board, then was attacked by the Greens for being too little involved in Belarus. According to the participants, deputy Manuel Sarrazin accused the foreign minister of having “sold Belarus” and given Russia a free hand. Maas angrily accused the Greens of “complacency.”
The Foreign Minister seemed uncertain, crucial questions remain unanswered: How does Germany want to deal with Belarus and Russia? What would the sanctions look like? And what’s next for the Russian-German Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project?
