Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Diego Schwartzman are the competitors Alexander Zverev will face in the Nitto ATP Finals for qualification for the semi-finals of the unofficial World Championship of professional tennis. Germany’s number one seems to have taken the task a bit more difficult, especially as Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev feel right at home in the hallway.
Medvedev strong as a bear in Paris-Bercy
Against the latter, Zverev was only a few days ago, he had to acknowledge in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris-Bercy that the Russian was not only the slightly better player, but also the man a little fitter this afternoon. It should be place. In a very clear third set, Zverev finally had to admit defeat, in a third race in which Medvedev performed almost perfectly.
However, the 23-year-old from Hamburg leads the head-to-head quite clearly, with five wins and just two losses ahead. One of them is dated exactly one year ago, in the same place where Zverev and Medvedev will meet again this year: at the London O2 stadium. At the time, the German clearly prevailed in two sets, but benefited from the obvious exhaustion the Russian had to contend with at the end of the season. In any case, this will not be a problem for the Moscow man this year, as he made many short tournament appearances before his successful career in the French capital and only found his best form again in Bercy.
Djokovic, the favorite in London
The most difficult rival in the group is undoubtedly Novak Djokovic, the world number one, top favorite for the title in the British capital. Zverev also knows what it feels like to beat the Serbs, but the German is 2: 3 behind in the head-to-head with Djokovic. Two of these matches took place in London, when Djokovic managed to prevail for the first time in the group stage, but Zverev won the much more important match in the final.
The Serbian’s form is difficult to assess, given his last appearance in the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Now, the 33-year-old has taken enough time not only to fully regenerate physically, but also to prepare perfectly for the end of the season. You can expect a Novak Djokovic in very good shape.
Schwartzman supposedly the easiest opponent
The fourth of the group in Zverev’s group is named Diego Schwartzman and he may call himself a rookie at the Nitto ATP Finals. The Argentine, who is the strongest on clay, is considered the supposedly easiest opponent among the eight best players of the season. The head-to-head with Zverev remains balanced, despite the German winning the last match a few weeks ago in the Cologne final with great confidence.
He has already shown on several occasions that the Argentine can also show excellent performances on hard court. At last year’s Erste Bank Open, for example, when he only failed in the final against Dominic Thiem. Or at the US Open 2019, when he was able to defeat Alexander Zverev. The Germans can only expect Herculean tasks in London. And that already in the group stage.
