Mermaid rehearsal throughout Austria
From 12 noon to 12:45, the three civil defense signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All Clear” were broadcast nationwide after the signal “Siren Test”. The test alarm is used to verify the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system, and the public should become familiar with the signals and their meaning.
Detailed results for federal states:
- Burgenland 100 percent all 319 sirens worked
- Upper Austria 100 percent all 1,430 sirens worked
- Vorarlberg 100 percent, all 226 sirens worked

The population alert system was also tested
A test was carried out again via the new app-based population alert system “KATWARN Österreich / Austria”, which is available free of charge for smartphones, but also as an SMS and email service. If necessary, it can be used in conjunction with siren signals to warn the public.
The alert and alarm system is operated by the Ministry of the Interior with the offices of the state governments. “This means that Austria is one of the few countries that has a full siren warning,” emphasized the BMI. The signals are emitted by 8,221 firemen’s sirens. Depending on the dangerous situation, it is activated by the Federal Alert Center in the Operations and Coordination Center (EKC) of the Ministry of the Interior, by the state alert centers of the individual federal states or the district alert centers.
