“Isn’t it obvious? I don’t think any other player has won a tournament as often as he has here,” Djokovic said after moving on to Sunday’s final (3pm / Eurosport) against the 34-year-old Spaniard. Nadal is aiming for his 13th title at this year’s Roland Garros tournament, his match record is 99 matches won and only two losses. Novak Djokovic taught him one of them in 2015, the other Robin Söderling from Sweden in 2009.
Serbian Djokovic, a year younger, had to work hard on Friday night. He defeated the strong Stefanos Tsitsipas) 6: 3, 6: 2, 5: 7, 4: 6, 6: 1 and now sees himself as an outsider against Nadal. The record champion reached the final with a 6: 3, 6: 3, 7: 6 (0) victory against Diego Schwartzman. In mutual balance, Djokovic has the nose with 29:26 wins, but Rafael Nadal has won the last three matches on clay. In 2020 the two exceptional players met once, Djokovic won on hard court in the framework of the ATP Cup in straight sets.
Djokovic expects cooler conditions in the fall to give him greater chances against Nadal than on the usual tournament date in early summer. “But still, despite the conditions, it still is,” said Djokovic: “It’s Rafa, we are playing in the final, on clay.”
