The Trump administration is crumbling
| Reading time: 3 minutes
Ironically, the Minister of National Security, responsible for internal security, collapsed shortly before the change of power. The FBI registered new threats of violence, for example, against Joe Biden. 15,000 members of the National Guard will protect Washington.
VBefore Donald Trump’s presidency is about to end, his government collapses. Current Homeland Security Minister Chad Wolf announced his resignation on Monday night, hours before a planned visit by Trump to the border wall with Mexico.
In recent days, Trumps’ education and transportation ministers had already resigned, as well as several senior officials. Given Trump’s extreme loss of reputation after the recent unrest he instigated, cabinet members and leaders of the outgoing administration can expect to be identified with Trump’s stigma for the rest of their lives.
Wolf, 45, was Trump’s fifth Secretary of Homeland Security. The Republican was never ratified by the Senate, so he was only in office. The resignation is spicy for the security situation in the United States, as the Secretary of Homeland Security is responsible for the President’s security, among other things. About 250,000 employees report to him, only the Pentagon and the Veterans Ministry have a higher level of staff.
The Secretary of Homeland Security also oversees the Secret Service, which currently protects not only Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, but also President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Minister of National Security must, among other things, ensure the security of the inauguration of new President Biden on January 20.
This is a gigantic task for which a personnel change could be very explosive at this point. The FBI expects new armed protests on Capitol Hill and in the capitals of all 50 states from next weekend until the inauguration. Various groups are calling for the “storming” of government buildings, according to an internal FBI letter, cited by CNN.
There are also threats of another “insurrection” if Trump is removed from office before the inauguration. Other threats have been directed against Biden and Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. All three politicians belong to the Democratic Party. Shortly before his resignation, the Minister of National Security, Wolf, had announced that the precautions for a special national security situation at the inauguration would take effect this Wednesday and not on January 19.
As many as 15,000 National Guardsmen could be deployed during Biden’s inauguration, he said Monday. About 6,000 members of the National Guard from six states have already arrived in Washington. The Democratic Mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, urged Americans to stay away from their city during Biden’s inauguration in anticipation of a precarious security situation. The inauguration is said to be much more modest than usual due to the Covid epidemic.
By Wednesday, thousands of Trump supporters had violently broken through the barriers in front of the Capitol.
A few illegally entered the headquarters of Congress, devastated offices, smashed windows, stole objects and waved Trump flags. Five people were killed, including a police officer. At least two Capitol Protection Police officers have been suspended and more than a dozen are under investigation for alleged involvement in the riots.
America’s democracy is under attack. The outgoing president is silent on the unprecedented assault on the Capitol. Trump has entrenched himself in the White House, his Twitter account has been closed. Trump does not show any remorse, it was said Monday in his surroundings, he was even more bitter about his defeat in the presidential election on November 3.
The outgoing Secretary of Homeland Security justified his resignation, unlike his colleagues in the department of education and transportation, not with the violence instigated by Trump in and on Capitol Hill last week. Wolf, instead, referred to critical court rulings on the Trump administration’s immigration policy. Consequently, the legitimacy of his role as executive minister is also in question.
Wolf was a staunch supporter of Trump. Last week, however, he asked Trump to condemn the disturbances on Capitol Hill. Wolf’s successor will be Pete Gaynor, 63, who is currently the managing director of FEMA’s disaster management agency. He would be the sixth Homeland Security Secretary Trump in less than four years.
