A high-ranking member of the al-Qaeda terrorist organization is said to be dead. Egyptian Abu Muhsin al-Masri was killed by special forces in Ghazni province on Saturday, the Afghan secret service NDS said. Al-Masri, also known as Husam Abdal-Rauf, was on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List of the United States Federal Police and had been wanted on a warrant since 2018.
According to a UN Security Council report, the al-Qaeda terrorist organization is still active in twelve provinces of Afghanistan. Consequently, there are still relations with militant Taliban Islamists. The Taliban signed an agreement with the United States in late February, pledging to end their ties with other terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda.
Former al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. They were the catalyst for the US-led international military intervention in Afghanistan. The Taliban, who were in power at the time, had given shelter to bin Laden. US special forces killed him in 2011.
