Currently 2.7 percent of Covid 19 infections in Austria that are associated with a cluster of cases can be assigned to the education sector. This emerges from AGES’s current cluster analysis. Another four percent come from “Mixed” clusters, in which the transmissions occurred in a combination of the education sector with the areas of home, health and social affairs, leisure, work and sports.
So far, a total of 4,178 groups of traceable cases have been identified in the course of the epidemic in this country, in which 23,573 cases are found. The total number of cases at the end of September was 45,226. Consequently, about half of all cases can be assigned to groups.
Half of the infected people who can be assigned to the group were infected at home in phase IV, entitled “Increasing number of cases since 01.09.2020” by AGES. “Household clusters continue to dominate,” Daniela Schmid, chief epidemiologist of the Agency for Food Safety (AGES), told reporters on Friday. In the last calendar week (week 39), among the 306 new groups with a total of 994 cases, more than 200 groups with 539 infected people were assigned to the household.
In about 15 percent of all previous phase IV, infection occurred during leisure time. In week 39, almost a fifth of the cases (186) could be assigned to this type of activity, which includes public and private events or local visits.
Almost 10 percent of the cases that could be counted in a group in recent weeks can be traced back to the “set” workplace. Last week there were 66 new cases in this area.
In phase IV, about three percent can be assigned to an infection related to the health and social sector, the hotel and restaurant industry, as well as sports activities and the education sector. In the previous epidemic phase (“Increasing relief as of April 12, 2020”) this value for the education sector was only 0.5 percent, but summer holidays also fall during this period.
According to the Ministry of Education, a total of 1,218 students and 178 teachers had tested positive for the corona virus across Austria as of October 1. There are also 51 positive cases among administrative staff. Schools are apparently no longer places of cluster formation: By week 39, the analysis shows that only 3.1 percent of new cases (31) actually originate from educational clusters. Combined with homes, leisure and sports, there is an additional 3.4 percent.
The proportion of clusters associated with travel activities has decreased significantly over time: while the proportion of cluster cases here in phase III was around 11 percent, so far in phase IV it is 3.5 percent . More recently (week 39), only 1.6 percent of new cases were assigned to this area.
