Austrian students have been studying at home for six weeks. According to one study, a quarter of students ages 10 to 19 study less than 3.5 hours a day at home.
On average, five hours are learned
Students are still in homeschooling. According to a study by the University of Vienna, a quarter of ten to 19 year olds spend less than 3.5 hours a day doing this. On average, students study five hours a day at home.
One percent of the students had less than an hour a day. 16 percent of respondents stated that they did not have their own computer or laptop for home learning. 21 percent do not receive support to learn in the family.
Mothers help
If there is help, it comes mainly (59 percent) from the mothers. For the “Learning under Covid 19 conditions” study, 8,349 students between the ages of 10 and 19 were interviewed. The study was conducted between the beginning of April and April 24 using an online questionnaire.
Since participation was voluntary and, for example, students without internet access could not participate, the results were not representative. “Rather, it can be assumed that risk groups are quite underestimated,” explains the research team at the Faculty of Psychology.
Well supported by teachers
38 percent stated that they had set daily learning times. Most (70 percent) develop a plan for assigned tasks. Independent examination of teaching materials makes learning at home particularly difficult.
Students feel well supported by the teaching staff: only three percent do not know how to contact them with questions. Despite the current circumstances, two thirds of the surveyed schoolchildren are comfortable, 80 percent are optimistic about the future.
